About Mario – Written by Chad Hainley
Out of everyone I met at SMU, Mario might have the most interesting story about what he did right before he went to college. Most people in our class went to their respective undergraduate universities immediately after high school and many others were working before getting ready to go back to school. Mario, however, was playing competitive hockey.
When he first told everyone about his time spent playing competitive hockey there were a lot of perplexed looks and even more questions, the most common one being, “Why did you play hockey and not go to school sooner?” Mario just laughed and said, “I love hockey and I wanted to see how good I could get at it.”
After getting to know Mario well during my time in law school, I think that story tells you a lot about him. He’s a man who follows his passions with everything he has, he’s the type of guy who believes in himself and his abilities, and if he has a goal then there is not much that can stop him. Anything that Mario sets his sights on he is likely to achieve, and he is one of the hardest working and most dedicated guys I’ve ever met.
I’ve witnessed Mario practice and compete time and time again for his Moot Court competitions, I’ve had the pleasure of travelling and studying abroad with him and witnessing him unpack a textbook and start studying in various hostels across Europe, and I’ve worked with Mario as a Summer Clerk at WA and noticed how he is usually the first guy in the office in the morning and the last guy to leave. There is no one that will work harder than Mario in order to maximize his or her own abilities, and I look forward to all that he will accomplish during his career.
